ScarWork is a form of scar therapy which uses gentle massage techniques, without oils or creams, to help post operative or burn scars. This specialised scar treatments, developed by American therapist Sharon Wheeler, is becoming increasingly popular in the UK with a network of over 100 therapists currently trained.
ScarWork is used to improve feeling and functionality in the scar and surrounding tissues, leading to increased movement between the layers of the skin, fascia (connective tissue) and muscle.
There may be visible cosmetic improvements- scars often appear smaller, flatter, paler and less prominent but the emphasis is on the underlying tissue changes. With reduction in the density of the scar tissue, and the improvement in tissue health, nerve impairment such as numbness, pain, itching, irritation or extreme sensitivity often improves. These improvements are often permanent.
In addition, tightness in surrounding tissues is reduced which helps to restore normal muscle function. Knots and tight ropey scars are softened and loosened, and the appearance of ridges and holes can be minimised. Several treatments may be needed to gain optimum benefit and individual response to treatment will vary.
Following an operation or accident, as the body rushes to close and heal the wound, different layers under the skin become adhered – stuck together. ScarWork stimulates the area, encouraging further natural healing to occur, helping to release these stuck layers and improving the movement in the scar and surrounding tissues.
Even very old scars can benefit from ScarWork treatment, and the technique is suitable for many different types of scars, including those after an accident, operation, burn or cosmetic surgery.
Before undergoing a course of ScarWork treatment, it is important that treatment scars are dry, healed and infection free.
