About Karin Elgar, PhD

I have been practicing as a nutritional therapist since graduating in 2004 from the renowned Institute for Optimum Nutrition, London. Prior to becoming a nutritional therapist I completed a Master’s Degree in Biology, a PhD in Physiology and worked in the pharmaceutical industry for many years.

I specialise in women’s health and fertility, and work alongside Mr Nardo, consultant gynaecologist and specialist in reproductive medicine, and his team at the Reproductive Health Group.

I am a member of the British Association for Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy (BANT) where I am currently regional coordinator, after having served on the Professional Practice (formerly Ethics) Committee for several years. I am registered with the Complementary and Natural Healthcare Council (CNHC), the voluntary regulatory body for complementary therapists which is endorsed by the Department of Health. I am also a Senior Associate of the Royal Society for Medicine.

In my spare time I love exploring the great outdoors with my husband and children, hill-walking, rock-climbing and travelling.

Nutrition for Fertility

Planning a family is an exciting time. However, when getting pregnant takes longer than expected or if we experience pregnancy related problems it can turn into one of the most stressful times in our lives. Diet and lifestyle choices can play an important role in fertility and pregnancy outcome. With my fertility package I aim to support you towards optimizing your chances of conceiving, either naturally or through assisted conception, and through a healthy pregnancy.

During your first consultation we will look at possible nutritional imbalances and from there draw up a tailor-made nutrition programme which includes

  • Your action plan report with diet and lifestyle advice.
  • A supplement programme, using a small number of targeted high quality supplements.
  • Menu suggestions and recipe ideas.
  • Relevant information handouts.

During follow-up consultations we review progress, discuss any test results and fine-tune the programme according to your needs.

FertilityPackage      £395
includesan initial and two follow-up consultations, a touch base telephone consultation (20 min) in between and the following tests:

Homocysteine test (blood spot)
Elevated levels of homocysteine have been linked to adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Vitamin D test (blood spot)
It is estimated that 70-90% of the UK population are low in vitamin D. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to pregnancy related problems.

Hair Mineral Analysis (hair)
Evaluates mineral levels and balance, as well as toxic heavy metals.

I also offer individual consultations:

Women’s Health

The female hormone system is characterised by a constant ebb and flow of hormones. When in harmony this orchestra of hormones supports good health on many levels. However, when out of balance the discordance can cause a multitude of symptoms and have a detrimental effect on our quality of life. Diet and other lifestyle factors can play an important role in hormone balance. My personalised nutrition programmes aim to support you towards balance and good health.

During your first consultation we will look at possible nutritional imbalances and from there draw up a tailor-made nutrition programme which includes

  • Your action plan report with diet and lifestyle advice.
  • A supplement programme, if necessary, using a small number of targeted high quality supplements.
  • Menu suggestions and recipe ideas.
  • Relevant information handouts.
