Manual Lymphatic Drainage

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) is a type of gentle massage intended to encourage the natural drainage of the lymphatic system, whose function is to move waste products away from the tissues back toward the heart.  MLD uses a specific gentle pressure and rhythmic circular movements to stimulate lymph flow.

Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage good for you?

MLD is particularly beneficial for those suffering from lymphedema, an accumulation of fluid that can happen after lymph nodes are removed during surgery, most commonly a mastectomy for breast cancer.

What can Manual Lymphatic Drainage help with?

– Reducing swelling and detoxifying the body especially post surgery.

– Alleviating pain by decreasing pressure on pain-sensitive areas.

– Promoting healing of fractures, torn ligaments, sprains, and lessening pain.

– Improving the functioning of the immune system due to improved lymph flow.

– Relaxation and stress relief which can help many stress related conditions.

Are there any side effect to the treatment?

There are usually no bad side effects after a treatment. It is fine to eat before and after a MLD treatment. It is recommended that you drink some water after your treatment and you may need to go to the toilet more often, as the re-energised lymphatic system starts to recycle excess fluid and waste. After an MLD treatment, you should feel more relaxed and clear headed!

Is Manual Lymphatic Drainage Safe?

It’s important to note that while MLD is very gentle, it isn’t suitable for everyone. If you have ongoing certain health conditions such as acute infections, thrombosis, or major heart problems we recommend that you consult with a healthcare professional before having MLD.

Laura Bateman

Laura originally studied Equine Science at Hartpury College, Gloucestershire, specialising in veterinary science, nutrition, coaching of the mind and body, and rehabilitative care. Learning about how the human body becomes more efficient in the saddle led her to a course in Swedish massage, which in turn provided the path toward clinical sports massage, injury rehabilitation and pre and post-natal massage. She is now a Sports massage therapist ITEC4 having trained with Active Health in Manchester and is affiliated to STO (Sports Therapy Organisation).

Laura employs a wide range of treatment techniques from soft tissue massage and manipulation to gentle joint mobilisation, myofascial release, trigger point therapy and the use of Alpha-Stim microcurrent therapy. In addition she may use Myofascial cupping as part of her treatments. She has a very keen interest in lymphatic function and treatment, having completed a course with the renowned Perry Nickleston from Stop Chasing Pain. In addition, she is also working to deepen her understanding of biomechanics. Laura looks at the body as a whole, rather than compartmentalising issues. As such her treatments may include exercises to take home or a look at lifestyle changes that may have been contributing to the problem a client presents.

Ever the student, Laura constantly undertakes new training to further her knowledge and skill set. This year she is hoping to finish her training and qualify as a health coach and is also currently completing a course in trauma and the effect it has on the body and mind.

Laura has treated a huge range of clients at Body Works Cheshire from young athletes, those spending long periods in front of a desk or behind the wheel, through to those with age related complaints. Laura also has a keen interest in equestrians and the issue they face as riders, having ridden all her life and worked in the industry for over a decade, before transferring over to sports therapy. She also has in depth experience of treatment of combat sports fighters, both pre and post fight, as well as maintenance during training, having worked with SuperGymMMA Thai boxers and MMA fighters. As a competitive body builder, she understands the rigors of weight lifting and the difficulties that can arise from posing if the body is not flexible enough. If you are looking for someone who understands the particular difficulties that can arise in these sports and how to fix them, Laura can help.

The ethos of Body Works Cheshire is that everybody who wishes to be treated whatever the complaint, receives the care they are entitled to and deserve. Sports therapy isn’t just for athletes, it is for anyone who needs it.
