Day of sorrow turns to baby joy
Jane Crump 42nd birthday should have been a day full of joy; she was mum to baby Charlie and looking forward to a new arrival in a few months.
But everything changed on that terrible day when Jane went for a scan was told her baby had no heart beat and had sadly died. At 42 Jane knew time was not on her side and she so wanted a little brother or sister for nine-month-old Charlie.
“I was devastated to lose a baby at 11 weeks, but had no reason to think that I wouldn’t get pregnant again easily,” says Jane from Northwich, Cheshire.
Over the next few months Jane and her husband, Phil, slowly recovered from the loss of their baby and tried to look to the future. Six months later, Jane was still not pregnant and becoming more desperate by the month. The couple were then advised to investigate their fertility levels.
Jane took the anti-mullerian hormone fertility test which gives an estimate of the woman’s remaining egg supply. Her results showed a level of 1.49 pnol/L, which is classed as very low or undetected. A good level for conception would be 28 or above.
“I was absolutely shocked by the result. By then I was 42 and felt the pressure of my biological clock ticking. I already had one beautiful child; but somehow felt incomplete after losing the second baby,” says Jane, who underwent surgery for endometriosis, well as testing positive for pre-cancerous cells.
“My anti-mullerian score was so low that we were told we were not even suitable for IVF and would only be considered us if we used egg donation.
“I panicked after the result, thinking that we would never have another child. But I am a positive person and believed that if it was going to be it would be. I felt as though my family life was hanging like a pendulum: on one side was the devastation that we would never have another baby and on the other we thought, if it happens, it happens.
“We did think we had left it too late. I wasn’t a career woman who only started thinking about a family in my 40s. Phil and I didn’t meet until I was 40 and once we were married we did want a family,” says Jane
“At first we were very against egg donation; but as the months went on we started to think more seriously about it. But I knew if I was to become pregnant, naturally or otherwise, I needed to be in peak health. I thought it there was a one in a million chance of having another baby then why should it not be us?
“I had experienced alternative therapies about 12 years ago and decided to ask about Cheshire Natural Health’s new fertility programme.” By this time Jane was also suffering from painful periods and stress.
Jane was assessed by Cheshire Natural Health Clinic Director Tracey Turton and embarked on a course of acupuncture. Herbal medicine was used to balance the menstrual cycle and nourish the endometrial lining after ovulation.
After a few weeks of treatment with acupuncturist Andreas Feyler, Jane’s stress levels and her period pains had markedly reduced. In just a few months Jane was able to break the news to a delighted husband that they were to be parents again without the trauma of IVF. Jane continued with acupuncture and herbal medicine prescriptions to support the settling of the embryo.
“After losing a baby, the first few weeks of this pregnancy were nerve-wracking. I knew I had to stay strong and healthy and found the acupuncture vital for a calm pregnancy,” says Jane, a flight attendant with British Airways.
Acupuncturist Andreas continued to treat Jane throughout her pregnancy and helped bring about a natural labour when Jane went overdue. “Acupuncture definitely contributed to a calm and controlled labour,” says Jane.
Little Izabella was born on March 24 weighing six pounds 4 ounces; a dark-haired playmate for two-year old Charlie.
