Complementary approach to childbirth

A leading North West hypnotherapist has joined the growing number of experts encouraging the use of complementary therapies as natural methods to combat the pain of childbirth.

Rosemary Reeves of Cheshire Natural Health at Stretton, near Warrington, has long advocated the use of complementary therapies during childbirth.  She says: “Having a baby is one of the most natural and fulfilling occurrences and, if possible, should be experienced without drugs.

“Of course the pain of child birth can be overwhelming; but sometimes it is the fear rather than the reality of the pain that makes it unbearable.  Fear is a powerful emotion that can cause you to experience pain more intensely. It needs to be controlled so that the mother-to-be can use her energy to give birth.

The mother of two was speaking after leading midwife, Dr Denis Walsh, spoke out against the use of anaesthetic drugs during childbirth, saying they could undermine a mother’s bond with her baby.   Dr Walsh, associate professor in midwifery at Nottingham University, called upon the Health Service to abandon routine pain relief and engage more with natural therapies such as hypnosis and hydrotherapy.

Rosemary teaches deep relaxation techniques and self-hypnosis to be followed by the mother-to-be during the birth. “Childbirth becomes so much more positive when the baby enters the world in a peaceful and calm environment. When the mother’s emotions are working in harmony with her body the use of drugs can be significantly reduced and this makes for a more serene, comfortable and memorable experience.”

Rosemary uses a combination of hypnotherapy, neurolinguistic programming and emotional freedom technique to help mothers-to-be.

Fear of childbirth (amongst other things) can also act as a block to fertility with the subconscious mind unable to cope with the thought of a traumatic birth and therefore preventing conception.  Rosemary is part of the highly successful Natural Fertility team at Cheshire Natural Health, helping couples to conceive with the support of complementary therapies, such as reflexology, acupuncture, as well as hypnotherapy.

“Fears can be strong enough to block the conception process because they set up an anxiety state and nature does not consider someone in a state of fight or flight to be a good candidate for motherhood.

“I have also had cases of women who have seen childbirth videos in early childhood or have overheard conversations about childbirth and this has upset them to the extent that the unconscious mind believes that childbirth is so horrific and life threatening for mother and child that it would be better if conception was blocked,” says Rosemary.

“The fantastic thing about hypnosis and Emotional Freedom Technique is that it provides a way of accessing and dissolving these hidden blocks, it calms and balances the mind and body and provides the best possible conditions for conception and successful pregnancy to take place.”
