The complementary therapy team at Cheshire Natural Health, near Warrington, looks at natural steps towards a health pregnancy.
Professional homeopath Irene Roberts recommends simple homeopathic remedies to treat minor ailments during pregnancy. If your symptoms persist or become chronic then you should consult a professional homeopath.
Morning sickness is a common complaint and includes nausea, some vomiting and tiredness. If your symptoms are severe or last beyond your third month, Irene recommends seeking professional help.
Irene recommends these remedies to combat nausea and sickness:
Ipecac: ideal to combat terrible nausea when being sick does not make you feel any better
Sepia: to combat feelings of of nausea at the smell or thought of food.
Pulsatilla: can help if the mother-to-be is weepy, moody, needs company and comfort. Also helpful if nausea is worse after food and drink
Nux vom: Can help with irritability and gagging.
Constipation is common during pregnancy, even with a healthy diet containing plenty of roughage. The condition can be exacerbated if iron is prescribed. Irene says mothers-to-be need to increase your fluids, especially water.
Irene recommends these remedies for simple constipation:
- Nux vom
- Sulphur
- Bryonia
- Sepia
Remember that homeopathic remedies do not cause side effects and cannot harm your unborn child. It is an ideal form of treatment for both mother and baby. However, Irene stresses that if your symptoms persist or become chronic then you should consult a professional homeopath.
Cheshire Natural Health’s Clinic director and Clinical Reflexologist Tracey Turton recommends reflexology as a fantastic therapy during pregnancy to combat morning sickness, lethargy, sciatic pains, general aches and pains. Tracey says that regular reflexology sessions throughout pregnancy can bring many benefits such as improved well-being, reduced swelling in feet and ankles, improved quality of sleep and improved digestion. Reflexology can also help to significantly reduce average labour times reduced compared with the national average for both first and second time mothers, says Tracey
“Most of my patient who have had regular reflexology sessions though their pregnancy report that their babies are incredibly calm and alert - perhaps because the mother experienced lower levels of stress during the pregnancy,” says Tracey.

The Bowen Technique is a very gentle therapy that can be used safely, during and after pregnancy, says Cheshire Natural Health’s Sheila Hind. The Bowen therapy looks at the whole body and keeps it balanced during pregnancy when there are so many changes occurring. It is particularly successful for sciatica, sacral pain, backache and swollen ankles. Also Bowen can alleviate pubic symphysis dysfunction which is a painful condition sometimes experienced during and following pregnancy.
